Welcome to ACADEMY OF BUILDING SCIENCE  Rater Resources.

We strongly suggest you review the following materials !

Here you will find resources that will help you prepare for the extensive Home Energy Rater training you are embarking on.

1. The material sources are for use anytime even while the training is in session or otherwise. All material is provided to help you prepare for the training and the exam.

Glossary of Building Terms

2. Geometry Examples allow you to make an assessment of your ability to calculate areas and volumes. You must be able to accurately calculate areas and volumes to work as a rater and there will be test questions that assess these skills.  We will review these examples and Formulas for these and other geometry problems which can be found on page 267 of Residential Energy – Cost Savings and Comfort for Existing Buildings.

3. The 2006 Mortgage Industry National Home Energy Rating Standard establishes the rules for the rating industry. You need not read all of it, but it will be very helpful to browse through the material and table of contents.

4. The RESNET National Rater Test Study Guide Outline highlights the basic knowledge set required for successful completion of the RESNET national exam.

5. Energy Conservatory Blower Door and Duct Blaster manuals give details of the setup and use of building diagnostic equipment. Spend time reviewing basic setup and use procedures.

6. Residential Energy – Cost Savings and Comfort for Existing Buildings by John Krigger and Chris Dorsi (hard copy) is the primary reference for the training. Read as much as you can – the time will be well spent.

7. Please install the 60 day trial version of REMRate software on your computer. Review the tutorial and the software itself. You will need a working knowledge of software so you can complete your rater certification.

8. Most of the documents in this Resource are in PDF format. Acrobat reader includes a search (or find) function under the Edit toolbar. It allows you to quickly search for key words in the document. Practice this skill in advance.

9. Practice  Questions identify key points from the class. You will be asked to complete these study questions and send a copy to Paul Kramer: paul@aheroinc.com  your trainer.
